Gmail and Google account to share a single profile picture

Google is going to make the Gmail and Google account profile pictures same. As per Google, it would be very easy for users and also would be helpful for the business purposes. Simply, Google is sharing the single image to all its applications to avoid all confusions.

In recent times, Google is making a lot of updates and this is one among them. As a result, the G Suite users, if they want to change their display picture, then they will be diverted to the ‘About me’ under Google profile settings. Here users can simply change their profile picture and that will be displayed as a pro pic for all the Google apps.

At present, Gmail display picture has nothing to do with Google account’s picture. Means, both Gmail and Google account have different profile pictures as we all know. Google also mentions that it can be sometimes confusing if both the Gmail and Google have the same profile picture. But for ease of use, Google made this change of sharing a single picture to all the Google apps.

After this update, when user logins to his/her Gmail and go the About me page in settings, he/she can see a pop-up asking to choose one picture between two images of your Gmail and Google accounts or to upload a new picture. To say it in a clearer way, if you go to the Settings > General > My Picture in your Gmail account, then you will be directed to the About me page and you will be asked to set a single profile picture for both Gmail and Google accounts.

In a statement, Google said that “We are combining the Gmail photo with the Google account profile photo for G Suite users. Now, when you go to change this setting in Gmail, you’ll be directed to the ‘About me’ section of your Google profile settings to set your profile picture”. Before the arrival of this update, it was hard for the users to find which image will be shown in which account. But now, the pictures can be easily managed by the users with this update.

The company also added that, “When you visit Settings > General > My Picture in Gmail on the web, you will be directed to change your picture in the “About me” section of your Google profile settings. If your Gmail and profile photos are currently different, and you have permission to edit your photo, you will see a pop-up when you visit your “About me” settings which will prompt you to select one of the images or choose an entirely new photo”.

According to the announcement, the Gmail users are no longer able to set the profile picture that is different from Google account. So, it is not possible to set the picture that will be displayed only for Gmail contacts which one use to send or receive messages. So, from now when you open your Gmail or Google account, it will lead to the About me page and asks to set the single profile picture. There will be options like,

  • Convert Gmail photo to Google account profile photo
  • Upload a new photo
  • Use current Google account profile photo

If needed, you can avoid this update by not visiting the About me page in settings. However, we can’t keep the single profile picture forever in our accounts. So, it’s better to go with the update!
