GOOGLE SEARCH gets its biggest up-gradation in 5 years by introducing BERT

Google has brought up its biggest upgrade in five years in the context of Google search, and Pandu Nayak, the Vice-President of Search, did throw light upon it in the recent briefings. Google has extensively worked upon its pre-existing machine learning algorithms and has focused on the context of the language to bring about a significant change or up-gradation in the Google query.

With this new up-gradation, Google users are going to have better interpretations around a short word or even longer than usual queries. The inappropriately placed words or awkward choice of words by the user will also receive a relatable reply by Google.

The company on Friday has announced about it using a brand-new Artificial Intelligence system, that the company itself has developed in its own labs known to be BERT, which stands for Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers. This initially concentrated on finding appropriate answers to the queries form the United States users and were of conversational type.

The relentless hard work of the company to understand its user’s queries has made it say that now it would be able to understand natural speech in a better way and not just the keywords, but would also pay its stress on prepositions and joining words.

The basic idea of this whole up-gradation was to enable people to type in the accent they speak in their day-to-day life. BERT would help the company to parse the language of the query in a better way and provide relevant information’s as compared to the earlier replies.

BERT, through its acronym, represents the important aspects of NLP, and it no more treats sentence as a bag of words rather treats all the words present in a sentence as a whole. Google did give a few examples to support its idea of the new Artificial Intelligence system BERT, before which the “no” in “Parking on a hill with no curb” was not paid attention to. But now, the no is regarded as a word of importance, and the search replies that Google replies to the users who send this as query.

Another example cited by Google was, “2019 Brazil traveller to the USA need a visa”, which earlier gave the details of people who can visit USA without red tape of VISA but now it shows results about the Tourism and Visitor from the US embassy and Consulates in Brazil who have shared their answers regarding what are the requirements in order to travel from Brazil to the United States with VISA.

Earlier, the search engine did not pay attention to the “to” which is now being taken care of. In accordance of this, the Google vice-president of Search Pandu Nayak said in a blog post that,” biggest leap forward in the past five years, and one of the biggest leaps forward in the history of search,’.

Google evidently says to receive billions of queries per day, and BERT implementation would affect the rank of 1 out of every 10 in it. This change might not be very noticeable to a lot of users but also does not mean will not have any significance to it. According to Pandu, “Language is incredibly subtle and nuanced”, and hence BERT is not yet ready to be the critique to your college essay.
